Shaking up my makeup stash for spring

Spring is here! Daffodils are blooming, baby lambs are baaing and the sun is starting to shine for that little bit longer in the evening. As with probably everyone, I like to give my makeup stash a shake up each time a new season rolls around but especially in spring. I love going from dark colours and full coverage to bright and airy bases. Bring on the sunshine!

I’ve come to the conclusion that I love it when I’m just that little bit more tanned and I have no idea why I don’t give myself bit more of a glow. So I feel like I might start using a gradual moisturiser more often. Anyway that’s a bit off topic. What made me think of this was when I used my Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser in Alaska the other day, I really liked the way it looked at the bit of extra colour it gave to my skin. I’m going to tan up and move this into my daily stash. It’s probably right on the cusp of how dewy I’m willing to go but I do like the light base this gives. Another glow giver that I like to bring out in the spring is the Pixi Glow Booster in Peach Glow. I don’t usually use it all over (bit too sheeny for me) but I like to put it on the tops of my cheekbones just for a bit of added something.

I don’t know why I try and fall in love with cream products every year, but each spring without fail I’ll add some sort of stick product into my daily makeup routine. So, here we are, with the Collection Speedy Blush in Cheeky now in my everyday stash. As stick products go I really like this one because it’s not greasy, not too firm and the right amount of creaminess. It’s also a great colour and I can build it up to the right amount of ‘flush’. I’ve shared my love for the Dior Addict Lipstick in Tout-Paris before loads of times, but there’s a reason why it’s one of my favourite products, especially in the spring. It’s a bright pink which goes on sheer so is amazing at jazzing up an everyday face. It’s also very moisturising and when the weather starts to get warmer this is just what I want. I can see myself getting to the end of this soon and it upsets me so much! Any recommendations for moisturising lipsticks that are pink and sheer would be much appreciated!

Last year I picked up the Fig Fiction Perfume from & Other Stories in the sale and instantly fell in love. To me it’s springtime in a bottle and I’m all about it. It’s not overly floral and really fresh. To me it just smells of the outdoors, like when you go on a long walk and smell of grass. It gives me such good memories of last year (bought it on a friends weekend in Oxford and every time I spray it it reminds me of Countryfile Live) and I’m obsessed.

If I could only pick three lip products

My lipstick preferences have definitely seen a huge change over the years. In my sixth form days I was obsessed with the felt tips that stained your lips all sorts of weird colours, then I was all about anything that looked like a crayon and if it was orange, even better. I went through a phase of wanting matte lips dryer than the sun (as I think we all did) and then if it was a product I couldn’t apply it in under two seconds then I didn’t want to know. I was looking back at old blog posts (because your girl is running out of ideas – please help) and came across one from pretty much a year ago on what products I would choose if I could only have three and it made me think about how my preferences can change in just a year. So here’s my updated options if I could only pick three lip products to use for the rest of time.

LMX Matte Lip in Cupid | I’m a big fan of everything about this product. The colour, the texture, the smell (it smells like vanilla). It’s the perfect level of matte for me, drys down but doesn’t suck all the life out of my lips, and it doesn’t matter if you go over some bits to get an even coat. The applicator is big enough to give the coverage but small enough to be precise. I also love this colour because it’s pretty much my lip colour but brighter. This on top of the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk is my go-to evening out lip of choice.

Dior Lip Glow Hydrating Colour Reviver Lip Balm in 001 | Last year on my list was the Dior Addict Lipstick in Tout-Paris and although I still love that one, if I had to pick between that and the Lip Glow, I’d go with the Lip Glow. It’s so easy to wear, just slap it on and go, and it’s really comfortable on the lips. It goes quite pink on my lips but because it’s so sheer I like how it looks. In the summer this is perfect and I’m excited to crack it out on the daily again.

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Bitch Perfect | This one is very new to me but I’m already 100% obsessed with it. It’s moisturising but has a lot of pigment to it so is the perfect everyday product for me. The peachy-nude shade goes with my makeup on most days and I love it. The formula is fab and I think it makes me want to try other shades.

If you could only pick three lip products what would you choose?

Books, perfumes and my perfect lip liner | January Favourites

Oh January, how slow you’ve been. Nah, it’s not been too bad but I’ll be glad when February finally rolls around. That might have something to do with the fact it’s my birthday though! I’ve been loving a fair few bits this month, mainly books surprisingly – New Year, new me, blah blah. Not so many beauty bits this month but I’ve bought a few makeup bits recently (haul coming soon) so maybe next month.

I preordered ‘An Edited Life’ by Anna Newton when it first went up on Amazon using my brother’s account and pretty much every time I saw him it was “has that book come yet?”, “when you getting that book” and “that book’s taking a while to come”. But finally it was released near the beginning of the month and I was over the moon when it came through the letterbox. I went straight to the capsule wardrobe section because for the last few years I’ve been wanting to dip my toe in that pool. So far I’ve cleared out my sock drawer, started organising my budget and looked at spice racks on Amazon. I love how it’s written (just like a chatty vibe) and if you need a kick up the back side then this is perfect. Also I love Anna’s blog and videos so I was always going to be a fan of this!

If there was ever a lip liner to steal my heart then it was this one. The LMX Lip Liner in Hold Up is such a little star and I cannot get enough of it. I mentioned it in my post where I went through what’s in my lip drawer (read that here) but it’s from Little Mix’s makeup range at Boots and is a brown which also learns a bit pink/purple. Not too vampy but something that’s a little more interesting than your standard ‘nude lip’. I wear this most days either with the LMX Matte Lip in Cupid or my Dior Lip Glow and I’m 100% obsessed.

We’ve been watching so many crime dramas and murder mysteries since Christmas that it’s getting a bit scary when I go to bed and think someone is hiding in my wardrobe! But when I fancied trying to start reading before going to sleep as we entered the New Year, I carried on the murder theme by reading ‘And Then There Were None’ by Agatha Christie. I watched the BBC drama when it was on a few years ago and loved it so I bought the book for my mum for Christmas (I’d like to point out that she likes Agatha Christie so it wasn’t that selfish of a present). I read it quite slowly, about 30 pages a night, but it’s only a thin book so it didn’t take me that long to finish and it had me gripped from the start. SO GOOD! If you don’t know what it’s about, basically ten people go to an island and drama/murder happens. Even though I thought I could remember who the killer was (I didn’t, turns out I have the world’s worst memory and had forgotten most of the plot) I found it hard to put it down. If you’re wanting a quick read that’s easy to understand but keeps you on edge then I totally recommend this.

Earlier this month I went to the cinema to watch Mary Poppins Returns and oh my goodness gracious it was SO GOOD! I thought the film really good, easy watching and if you’re a Disney fan like me I’m sure you’ll be just as obsessed. I think the soundtrack is what’s made me fall in love with the film. Upbeat? Tick. Catchy? Tick. Has songs with fast talky parts that make me want to learn them instead of things I should be doing? Yes. A Cover Is Not The Book is my favourite but most of them are great.

Last, but not least, a special mention goes to the Molton Brown Perfume in Muddled Plum. I got this for Christmas and I’ve been wearing it everyday since, completely in love. It’s wintery, fruity and comforting – perfect for this time of year I think. I also have the shower gel which is just as fab (and glittery so a massive win), the only thing that’s missing from my life is a body moisturiser in this scent and then my life will be complete. Also it’s made me want to try more Molton Brown perfumes. If they did a rhubarb one I would be all about that.

From white to whoa that’s tanned | St Tropez First Impressions

My uni friends will tell you, I’m not a fake tanner. I went through my uni years without the tactile tanning sessions to make sure the body glow was at the optimum level for nights out, I never understood what all the fuss was about. That was, however, until a couple of months ago. I was going to my cousins wedding and wanted a little bit of a tan so I didn’t look like a ghost up against my other family members. I read reviews and it looked like St Tropez Express Tan was the way to go, a natural tan that develops in three hours and means I won’t have to sleep feeling sticky. On my trial run I didn’t go overboard and I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t looking much darker than I did when I was going au natural. So the next time, I went all out a smothered myself in the stuff. This is when everything changed. I think I like the compliments I get more than anything. Like, ‘ooh you look tanned’ or ‘have you been away’. No I have not, it was all done in the comfort of my own bathroom!
Anyway, since this revelation I’ve still not delved majorly into the world of fake tan but there are two products I’ve found work for me so I thought I’d share them. The first is the above mentioned St Tropez Express Tan. So easy to use, you just have a shower, tan yourself, wait one to three hours, shower it off, go to sleep and wake up in the morning to find yourself a golden goddess. If, like me, you’re quite new to the tanning world I’d recommend getting this little kit. It’s £15 and you get a bit, a mini exfoliator, a mini moisturiser and a mini Express Tan. It means you can try out the tan without having to shell out £33 on something you might not like. Plus I’ve had three applications from the mini and I reckon it could do another so there’s plenty to give it a good test! I’d read reviews that the St Tropez In-Shower Tan was good but not great and that it worked best as a top up for a pre existing tan. So after my recent holiday I thought I’d get it to give it a whirl. Cue an email from Beauty Bay saying St Tropez was 20% off and I was soon the proud owner of another money saving (well sort of) minis set. This set (which I can’t seem to find on the website anymore which is a shame seeing as I only bought it a couple of weeks ago.) features the Classic Tan, In-Shower Tan and Gradual Tan. I’m yet to use the other two products (but I’ll let you know what I think if I like them) but I quite liked the shower tan. After I got over the fact that I have no idea how much to apply or where I had already applied it, it worked quite well. I can understand that there would be next to no colour had I not had a ‘base layer’ but I can see this as a good product to top up my holiday glow.
What’s your favourite tanning brand and product. Obviously I’m still new to the world of tanning so I’d appreciate any recommendations!

A very exciting airport purchase | Dior Addict Lipstick

I recently came back from a week away in Lanzarote and what an amazing week of relaxation it was. Seven days of sun, tapas and lots of reading, we were back at the airport waiting to catch a flight back to unusually sunny Britain, *sob*. As a final holiday treat to myself I decided I was going to buy something a little more high end that I wouldn’t think about getting at home. After wandering around the duty free shop in Arrecife airport I decided with it’s beautiful packaging and great shade selection that a Dior lipstick would be the way to go. A fair few swatches later I walked out of the shop with the Dior Addict Lipstick in Tout-Paris.

I’m in love with this lipstick. The texture is soft and creamy but not at all sticky and it has a decent lasting power on the lips. The colour I went for, Tout-Paris, is a sheer bright pink. I wanted something that I would wear everyday because even though it will be a ‘special product’ I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t just sit in a drawer gathering dust. It works well on it’s own and gives a sheen to the lips but I also love to use it on top of my Body Shop Lip Liner in Clover Pink, a my lips but better colour. I think it’s the perfect product for summer and I can’t wait to wear it on the daily!

I’d love to add more high end products to my collection so any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Summer products that come out of hiding

I love winter, it’s my favourite of the seasons but there’s something about summer makeup that gets me excited. I love the bright colours and the glossy finishes that summery products give, although a high coverage matte base is what I’m all about.

The first product that comes out in the summertime is SPF. I know! I’m sorry! I should wear SPF all the time but I only ever remember when it’s sunny outside. I’m currently using the Clarins UV Plus UV+ SPF50 neutral which I got free from a Sephora once upon a time. Because I always forget to wear it except in summer, it’s one of the product that gets introduced back into my collection at this time every year. Another product that I’ve reintroduced into my collection is the L’Oreal Glam Bronze Cushion De Soleil. It’s a really good product when you just want to give your face a natural bronze and give it some warmth. I use a stippling brush to apply this where I normally put my bronzer and it gives such a nice warmth to the face and makes me look a little more sun kissed. I’m totally loving it at the minute.

Two years ago when I was in Florida I bought the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Tipsy and fell in total love. It’s a beautiful coral/pink colour that is perfect for summer and has been a staple in my collection since I bought it. It can be quite easy to overdo it with this product as it’s very pigmented but using just a little bit at a time means you can build up a gorgeous glow. I’ve been loving this blush when I use the Tanya Burr My Paradise palette on my eyes. Now last but not least the Clinique Pop Lipsticks in Melon Pop and Poppy Pop. Just look at these. Not only do the shades scream summer but the formula is so creamy they are perfect to wear when it’s boiling hot outside. I’m not often brave enough to wear Poppy Pop but Melon Pop is so easy to wear, it’s perfect for everyday.

Do you have any products that you get out of hiding when summer rolls around? Let me know!

What I’m putting on my face on the daily

Welcome to a precocious everyday makeup routine! Because why write a normal title when you can be cool and quirky (note the sarcasm).

I’m stuck in a bit of a primer rut at the minute, nothing seems to be working so recommendations would be much appreciated. Anyway, my base starts with the L’Oreal Nude Magique Cushion Foundation in 03 Vanilla. I used this foundation last summer and only just repurchased it recently. I’m so in love. It’s quick to apply, I use my Real Techniques Complexion Sponge, gives a light but build able coverage and lasts quite well on my skin, I have to do a mid-day blot but that’s the case for most of my foundations. Concealer wise I use two. First the Revlon Colorstay Concealer in Fair on spots and any areas I want more coverage and the Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer in Ivory for under my eyes. They’re not my favourite concealers in the world but they do the job for everyday. I find the Revlon one quite sheer and not as heavy duty as I like and I find the Rimmel concealer can sometimes look a little orange at the end of the day. I then set my makeup with the Laura Mercier Translucent Power. This powder is a literal dream. It feels really soft on my skin, if that makes sense, and it keeps my oily skin at bay at least until mid-afternoon.

Because I get my brows tinted every month, day to day I just use a gel through my brows. I was so excited to try out the Fleur de Force Brow Gel when it was first released and I have to say it didn’t disappoint! I have it in Medium and it’s the perfect shade for me. Both ends work really well, the tinted end, which I use day to day, fills in any gaps in my brows and the clear end sets them into place when I use something else to fill them in, like the Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade. I still like to wear eyeshadow everyday but I try to go for something really easy. I do one swipe of the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Jean on my lid and blend out the edges, then pack Trick from the Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette. It’s a gorgeous rose gold eye that literally takes 30 seconds. The wear-time isn’t fantastic, it normally disappears by the time I come home from work, but it does the job.

Now to finish off the rest of my base. I’ve been testing out the Freedom Contour Kit in Fair and I have to say I’m in love! I was previously using the Maybelline Contour Kit but it was so orange it looked awful at the end of the day. This is very subtle but it just gives my face a little extra help in the cheekbone department (and trust me I need all the help I can get!). I love the Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer, it gives my face just the right amount of warmth and it doesn’t give me an orange face. Also it smells amazing. For blush I’ve been using my Mac Blush in Immortal Flower which was kindly given to me by a friend three years ago and it’s still going strong! (Side note: I can’t find a link to it so this shade may not be available anymore *sheds tear*).  It’s just a really nice pink that looks natural and it’s also really hard to over do it. For highlight day to day I use The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer. I apply it with a fan brush and it gives a nice glow that isn’t too intense but you can still see it, which I like because if I go to the effort of wearing highlighter I want you to be slightly blinded by my glow!

For the last two weeks I’ve been putting the Tanya Burr Matte Lip in Rhubarb and Custard to the ultimate test! I’m going to a wedding in a few weeks and I haven’t decided what makeup I’m wearing but I want something that will last all day. I have to say I am seriously impressed with this product. The colour is gorgeous for spring, a bright pink that’s not totally in your face, and it lasts really well on the lips. I put it on in the morning and I only have to reapply after I’ve eaten my lunch at about 1.30pm, which for me is amazing because I seem to eat off my lipstick without even realising it!

As I mentioned, I’m on a mission to find products that will last all day so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

Cleansers: Oil vs Cream

For the past few months me and my skin have been having, let’s say, a disagreement. I’ve tried to up the skincare routine and in my quest for perfect skin I’ve encountered a few bumps along the way. I started off my journey trying out the more oily products such as the Body Shop camomile cleansing oil and the cleansing butter. Let me tell you, if you have oily skin this is not a good plan. For the first week of using both of these products I thought that they were miracle workers. I mean, a few rubs and swipes and all of your make up is gone, insane! But then after a while it made my skin feel really greasy and I got so many spots I had to stop. It made me really sad because I enjoyed using both of these products but it was one of those things that my face didn’t agree with. This took me to try out something else that wasn’t oily and thicker in texture. Enter Soap and Glory’s the Ultimelt. I don’t know if this is meant to be used as a cleanser but it certainly works! The texture is a thick cream and it smells like a trip to the spa. The only problem I found with this was that it made my eyes sting a little when I tried to take off mascara but in terms of my skin I had no breakouts. Because I was coming to the end of it I though I’d give the famous Liz Earle cleanse and polish and boy am I glad I did! I’ve only been using this for a few weeks but it’s cleared up my skin (because I stupidly went back to the oil, idiot Abz, idiot!) and my face looks visibly brighter. It takes no time at all to take off my makeup and is a really pleasurable experience! So all in all for my face creams win every time, go cream!

Lip Problems

In the last 12 months I’ve been seriously obsessed with everything that us girls can put on our face, but there’s still one thing that I can’t seem to get right: lips. When I apply it everything looks great but after about 2 minutes I look in the mirror and it’s all rubbed off! I don’t know if it’s my lip shape or if I just lick my lips all the time but it’s baffling! I bought a lip scrub to make a better canvas for the products but that didn’t work. What I’ve been doing is trialling different types of lip products other than straight lipsticks to see if anything else will work and actually stick!

My first thought was lip liners. People always say that they make your lipstick last longer so I splashed a whole £1 on an essence on called red blush. At first I was a huge fan. It lasted ages on my lips and looked pretty good but after a while I thought that my lips were going to rip in half if I smiled because they were so dry! That was out. My second thought was gloss because if I could feel it was there maybe I’d know if I was licking it off. After hearing many good things about them I bought a Maybelline colour elixir in the shade caramel infused and it was a good purchase! The fact that I could feel that it was there, not in a bad way, made me consciously want to keep it on so it seemed to last much longer than anything else that I tried. The only downfall was the winter wind, not great for the hair. The last thing I tried was the Maybelline color drama in minimalist and ladies and gentleman we have found out winner! It’s not too dry and not too slippy and it just seems to stick to my lips. Stays in place for ages, looks and feels great, what more can you ask for. Hopefully I get better at the whole lips thing so I can expand my lipdrobe, sorry purse!
