Spring is here! Daffodils are blooming, baby lambs are baaing and the sun is starting to shine for that little bit longer in the evening. As with probably everyone, I like to give my makeup stash a shake up each time a new season rolls around but especially in spring. I love going from dark colours and full coverage to bright and airy bases. Bring on the sunshine!
I’ve come to the conclusion that I love it when I’m just that little bit more tanned and I have no idea why I don’t give myself bit more of a glow. So I feel like I might start using a gradual moisturiser more often. Anyway that’s a bit off topic. What made me think of this was when I used my Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser in Alaska the other day, I really liked the way it looked at the bit of extra colour it gave to my skin. I’m going to tan up and move this into my daily stash. It’s probably right on the cusp of how dewy I’m willing to go but I do like the light base this gives. Another glow giver that I like to bring out in the spring is the Pixi Glow Booster in Peach Glow. I don’t usually use it all over (bit too sheeny for me) but I like to put it on the tops of my cheekbones just for a bit of added something.
I don’t know why I try and fall in love with cream products every year, but each spring without fail I’ll add some sort of stick product into my daily makeup routine. So, here we are, with the Collection Speedy Blush in Cheeky now in my everyday stash. As stick products go I really like this one because it’s not greasy, not too firm and the right amount of creaminess. It’s also a great colour and I can build it up to the right amount of ‘flush’. I’ve shared my love for the Dior Addict Lipstick in Tout-Paris before loads of times, but there’s a reason why it’s one of my favourite products, especially in the spring. It’s a bright pink which goes on sheer so is amazing at jazzing up an everyday face. It’s also very moisturising and when the weather starts to get warmer this is just what I want. I can see myself getting to the end of this soon and it upsets me so much! Any recommendations for moisturising lipsticks that are pink and sheer would be much appreciated!
Last year I picked up the Fig Fiction Perfume from & Other Stories in the sale and instantly fell in love. To me it’s springtime in a bottle and I’m all about it. It’s not overly floral and really fresh. To me it just smells of the outdoors, like when you go on a long walk and smell of grass. It gives me such good memories of last year (bought it on a friends weekend in Oxford and every time I spray it it reminds me of Countryfile Live) and I’m obsessed.
My lipstick preferences have definitely seen a huge change over the years. In my sixth form days I was obsessed with the felt tips that stained your lips all sorts of weird colours, then I was all about anything that looked like a crayon and if it was orange, even better. I went through a phase of wanting matte lips dryer than the sun (as I think we all did) and then if it was a product I couldn’t apply it in under two seconds then I didn’t want to know. I was looking back at old blog posts (because your girl is running out of ideas – please help) and came across one from pretty much a year ago on what products I would choose if I could only have three and it made me think about how my preferences can change in just a year. So here’s my updated options if I could only pick three lip products to use for the rest of time.
LMX Matte Lip in Cupid | I’m a big fan of everything about this product. The colour, the texture, the smell (it smells like vanilla). It’s the perfect level of matte for me, drys down but doesn’t suck all the life out of my lips, and it doesn’t matter if you go over some bits to get an even coat. The applicator is big enough to give the coverage but small enough to be precise. I also love this colour because it’s pretty much my lip colour but brighter. This on top of the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk is my go-to evening out lip of choice.
Dior Lip Glow Hydrating Colour Reviver Lip Balm in 001 | Last year on my list was the Dior Addict Lipstick in Tout-Paris and although I still love that one, if I had to pick between that and the Lip Glow, I’d go with the Lip Glow. It’s so easy to wear, just slap it on and go, and it’s really comfortable on the lips. It goes quite pink on my lips but because it’s so sheer I like how it looks. In the summer this is perfect and I’m excited to crack it out on the daily again.
Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Bitch Perfect | This one is very new to me but I’m already 100% obsessed with it. It’s moisturising but has a lot of pigment to it so is the perfect everyday product for me. The peachy-nude shade goes with my makeup on most days and I love it. The formula is fab and I think it makes me want to try other shades.
If you could only pick three lip products what would you choose?
Buying a set of acrylic makeup drawers was a great decision on my part. I’ve had them for the best part of 18 months and although it means I have access to fewer products day to day, it means I can give things a good go. I tend to rotate things every few weeks to make sure I’m mixing up the things I wear, and it makes things more exciting when you rediscover a product you used to love. Anyway, what relevance does this have to this post? Well, welcome to my current lip drawer in my everyday makeup stash. These are the products I’ve been using day to day. Here’s what I love, what’s okay and what I won’t be going back to.
I mentioned this in my last post as it’s one of the favourite things to come out of the 2018 Glossybox Calendar – the Nars Velvet Lip Glide in Burning Love. I have so much time for this product purely because of how versatile it is. I won’t bang on about it too much because I mentioned it in last week’s post (you can read that here) but just know I love it and I think it will be sticking around in my drawer for a long time.
When it comes to lip colours, I’m a bit of a coward. I constantly think I’ll try and be bolder with my lip choices but I always stick to my trusty nudes or a darker variation on my natural pink-y lip colour. But, as per usual in the New Year, I’m determined to step out of my comfort zone and wear something a bit more exciting. Enter the Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle in Candy Venom. When I visited Paris last year we popped into Sephora and in the panic of the people/products/everything, I picked up a box of Sephora’s ‘best bits’. There was a lot of great stuff in there including this mini lipstick. The shade, a vibrant pink, is something that I would normally stay away from, but after giving it a go on a nightout in the French city, I fell in love with it (although at the end of the night it did end up all over my face which wasn’t fun). With this one it’s all about the formula. Hands down the best matte lipstick I’ve ever tried and I really want to pick it up in more colours. Stays put for a very long time but doesn’t make your lips feel like they’re in a desert. I do need to start wearing it more though so I’m hoping that by putting it in my lip drawer I’m more likely to pick it up.
This was a massive impulse purchase (when I say massive, I mean I wanted it for a while and one day picked it up and bought it without looking at the price) but one which has been 100% worth it. It’s the Dior Glow in 001 Pink. So easy to wear, it gives a sheer pink sheen and plumps up my lips a little bit. This was amazing in Summer for just a bit of something and it still works great when I want a lip balm with a little bit extra.
Oh look, it’s another moment where Abz thinks she can wear bright lipsticks day to day and ends up just leaving it in the drawer. It’s really sad because I love this product (Lancome L’absolu Lip Lacquer in Be Unique) and, although it’s bright, the colour but I haven’t been reaching for it much. I think it’s because I bought it at the end of summer and now we’re in the depths of winter I don’t reach for it. I may have to swap this out for something else and then it can come back with a vengeance in the spring. If you love lip products that feel like nothing on your lips then this is a winner for you. It has the consistency of water with a bit of a glossy finish but throughout the day as the gloss wears off you’re left with a really nice stain. I definitely need to get more wear out of this but it might just be in a few months time.
This little Nars duo came with a mini blush and I just love how tiny they are. Both in the shade Orgasm, they’re probably my perfect nude shade of pink that I used to wear constantly. The lip gloss is amazing. There’s so much to love. Great shade, as I’ve mentioned, with a hint of gold to make it pop, and a glossy formula that isn’t sticky disgusting. The size makes it amazing to chuck in my handbag and it works over SO MANY other products. A great buy. The same can’t be said for the lipstick though which is really disappointing. You would think that because they come as a pair they would both be cracking, but the lipstick really isn’t anything to write home about. The colour is nothing really, the formula is dry but not matte and I just can’t get it to work. Also, every time I use it I feel like the bullet is either going to drop out or break off. So the lipstick may have to be relegated to either the main makeup stash or the bin. Lip gloss is a keeper though!
Late last year a new matte liquid lipstick came into my life and I have to say, I’m not mad at it. It’s the LMX Matte Lip in Cupid. The shade I have is a light brown-peach and is probably my perfect ‘autumnal’ shade, so easy to wear for me and works on most days. As much as I love the colour, it’s the formula which makes this product a winner for me. No matter how many times I go over it when I apply it, it doesn’t get crumbly or ‘bunch up’ on my lips. It’s a smooth finish that’s matte without being drying and lasts a pretty long time. A total winner and is what I’m wearing nine times out of ten whenever I leave the house.
There are two lip liners currently in my lip drawer and both of them are fab. First up is my favourite lip liner from 2018 (click here to read my best in beauty post) which is the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk. I think it’s pretty much my perfect lip colour, maybe a little bit on the pinker side, but it looks amazing under any nude lip colour. It’s a perfect base for other products and when the lipstick on top rubs away throughout the day, this keeps it looking okay. The second lip liner is from LMX and is in the shade Hold Up. The formula of this is great, isn’t too hard when you apply it, stays put but isn’t drying. The colour is a deep pinky-brown and this paired with the LMX matte liquid lipstick is a dream combination. Not sure if you can still get the LMX products in Boots but if you can I really recommend the lip stuff.
FOUNDATION – Revlon Colorstay mixed with the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk: This combination is perfect for me. The staying power of Colorstay mixed with the seamless blending of the Luminous Silk. I do like them both individually but they are a formidable force together.
POWDER –Rimmel Stay Matte Powder: I used the RCMA powder for most of the year but when I was travelling about a bit for a few weekends I wanted a powder that was easier to travel with. I thought I’d pick up an oldie but a goodie and oh wow did it change my life. It made me realise that the RCMA powder wasn’t stopping any oil from sneaking through during the day and I was ending up a cake-y mess. The Stay Matte just does the job and I’m very grateful to have rediscovered it this year.
CONTOUR –Jordana Contour Stick: A surprise choice, I picked this up to take a Beauty Bay order one the £50 mark for free next day delivery. This doesn’t work for me really when I’m fake tanned but normal, pale Abz totally gets on with this. It’s a great shade to give a little bit of sculpting, is really easy to blend and is compact for travel.
BRONZER –Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer: After two years this one is still going strong. It’s the perfect matte shade for my naturally pale self but I can build it up when I’m a bit more tanned.
BLUSH –Mac Immortal Flower: I’ve been a bit of a blush slut this year but if I had to pin down a favourite I’d go for my old faithful, Mac Blush in Immortal Flower.
HIGHLIGHT –Tanya Burr Highlight in Champagne Sorbet and The Balm Mary Lou Manizer: I couldn’t pick just one highlighter, it was too difficult. There are two that I have in my life, one for everyday and the other for when I need something a bit more popping. The Tanya Burr one gives a great sheen with some sparkle and I love it for everyday. But the Mary Lou Manizer gives me that glow and ‘pow’ highlight when I need it. Best of both worlds!
BROWS –Glossier Boy Brow: This has literally changed my life. Bold statements but it’s 100% the truth. There’s some magic in that tiny little bottle that fluffs up the brows to the point where when I have my eyebrows tinted I don’t need to use anything else. On other days I’ll give them a bit of a boost with a brow pencil but this is the only thing I really need.
EYE PRIMER –Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base: Life changing makeup moments happening all over 2018. Ever since I got it for Christmas back in 2014, the Mac Paint Pot in Painterly has been my go to, everyday eyeshadow base, but when it came to an end I pick up the Nars one and oh my golly golly gosh it’s great. I swipe it on and then set it with my powder. It does not budge, like at all. I’m in love.
EYESHADOW PALETTE –Revolution Sophdoesnails Extra Spice Palette: I’ve been obsessed with this palette ever since I got it back in August. It has so many amazing shades in it, from everyday to random colours, that I can’t get enough. And it was only a tenner! Cookie dough is my favourite shade (obviously, it’s nearly all done) followed by cheesecake and dreams. If you don’t have this already I 100% recommend.
LIP BALM –Dior Lip Glow: I love this so much. It’s so easy to wear, comfortable and a gorgeous colour. It may not be the most moisturising lip balm but when I want a bit of something something on my lips then this is my go-to.
LIP PRODUCT-Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk: It may not be a lipstick or a lipgloss with bags of colour and selling points but it is my most used lip product of this year by far. It goes with a lot of my other lip products (my fave at the moment is the LMX Matte Lip) and just makes my lips look ten times better. Love you long time lip cheat.
When products are hyped up I go one of two ways. Either I’m really not interested and actively don’t search them out to not be the same as everyone else, or, I totally can’t wait and have to have it RIGHT THIS SECOND. These three products definitely fall in the latter category and once I’d heard the hype, I caved and needed them in my life. But are they worth it?
I’ve mentioned Isle of Paradise in the last few blog posts so you can probably tell already that I’ve well and truly fallen for the hype, but there is good reason. Not only do the products look so instagramable you could cry but the one I’ve tried is pretty damn cracking. I have the Self Tanning Drops which I’ve used mixed in with my moisturiser to make my face a little more sun kissed. As terrifying as it I thought it would be it’s actually really easy to use and looks great when it’s on. Blends in with the colour I am when I fake tan and gives me that glow I have been craving during the warmer months. Totally worth the hype – I can’t comment on the brand as a whole but this product is definitely a cracker.
I’ve wanted to try out the Dior Lip Glows for AGES. A lip balm that gives your perfect colour with a bit of a plump thrown in? Sign me up! I think it’s not a bad price (£24) and the packaging is gorgeous. But is it worth the hype? A bit. I know I know! I do love this product, a lot, but I thought it was going to be better. Don’t get me wrong, I really love this product and it works really well on me – like the perfect barely there lip product – but I think I wanted it to be a bit more glossy than it is. It you’re wanting a lip product that needs next to no effort and feels nice on this lips then this is the one for you – but don’t be expecting any miracles.
The Stila Glitter and Glows. Worth the hype? 100 per cent without a doubt. A liquid glitter that stays on your lids all day without budging, sign me up! There’s a reason there’s so much hype around this product because they’re blumming amazing! I can’t comment on the different shades but Gold Goddess could not be any more glittery and shimmery. If you’re going to some sort of event then you need these in your life!
I love all makeup products, from foundation to eyebrow gel I’m literally obsessed. The same is said for lip products but unlike all of the others where I chop and change what I use on the daily, I tend to stick to the same sort of thing. I think it’s out of habit and because I know that my favourites feel comfortable and have my go-to shade. Although I do test out new ones and new friends come into rotation, over the last few months these have been what I had on my lips.
Dior Addict Lipstick in Tout-Paris
To say I’m obsessed with this lipstick is an understatement because I am OBSESSED with it. I bought it in an airport when I was on my way home from Lanzarote last year because 1. I love the packaging and 2. I wanted to finally have a seriously posh lipstick in my collection. Picking a shade was hard because I wanted something a bit different to what I already have but one that I would wear on an everyday basis. Tout-Paris is a sheer bright pink that I’ve been wearing non-stop, like seriously. I usually layer it over the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk and it is my lips but pinker and glossier. Feels comfortable and easy to through in my bag if I’m out and about to just whack on if needed. Next on my list of things to buy is one of the Dior Lip Glows because if I love this as much as I do I’m sure I’ll be just as obsessed with that one!
Powerlips in Maven
One that’s relatively new to my collection but my mind still boggles with how amazing this formula is. Picture this, a matte liquid lipstick which is pretty easy to apply, stays on through thick and thin BUT doesn’t make your lips feel as dry as a desert. I mean it sounds like a fantasy but trust me, this is what it’s like. The shade is a dark nude on my skin which I love but it can be a bit much for everyday but I’m going to get another one which is a bit more nude-y (see, obsessed) and I can see that never leaving my lips.
Tanya Burr Lipstick in Pink Cocoa
This is my no nonsense, shove it on nude that is a fail safe for me. Like all of the lipsticks in the range it’s moisturising and comfortable to wear which is what I’m all about, especially when it’s a nude. If I have a warm toned eyeshadow on, like something from the Urban Decay Naked Heat palette, this is the lip option I do for and it always works. What I also really like about this is the packaging is so reflective that it can be used as a mirror, win, win, win!
I recently came back from a week away in Lanzarote and what an amazing week of relaxation it was. Seven days of sun, tapas and lots of reading, we were back at the airport waiting to catch a flight back to unusually sunny Britain, *sob*. As a final holiday treat to myself I decided I was going to buy something a little more high end that I wouldn’t think about getting at home. After wandering around the duty free shop in Arrecife airport I decided with it’s beautiful packaging and great shade selection that a Dior lipstick would be the way to go. A fair few swatches later I walked out of the shop with the Dior Addict Lipstick in Tout-Paris.
I’m in love with this lipstick. The texture is soft and creamy but not at all sticky and it has a decent lasting power on the lips. The colour I went for, Tout-Paris, is a sheer bright pink. I wanted something that I would wear everyday because even though it will be a ‘special product’ I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t just sit in a drawer gathering dust. It works well on it’s own and gives a sheen to the lips but I also love to use it on top of my Body Shop Lip Liner in Clover Pink, a my lips but better colour. I think it’s the perfect product for summer and I can’t wait to wear it on the daily!
I’d love to add more high end products to my collection so any recommendations would be much appreciated!
