Skincare picks, capsule wardrobe and new scents | February Favourites

Ah February. How you’ve flown by. But seriously, after the three decades of January I can’t believe how quickly this month has passed. I’ve had a lot of birthday fun and we’re ending on this great sunny weather. Who could ask for more?! In the middle of the month I was struggling to think of anything to add to my favourites but after my birthday I have a fair few to add to the list – with some I’m still giving a bit more of a test run which no doubt will feature in next month’s post. So without anymore fluffing up, here’s what I’ve been loving this month:

I have an item of clothing in my favourite this month – shock horror! This is rare because as much as I spend £50 a time on makeup and skincare I won’t spend £20 on a pair of jeans I desperately need. It makes so sense but anyone I’ll get back to the point. I have An Edited Life to thank for this buy. Last month I bought myself a black cord pinafore dress because I needed something to go with a load of colourful jumpers I had in my wardrobe and in the spirit of creating a capsule wardrobe I thought this would be a good bet. I’ve become fully obsessed with it. I wear it most days to work with a polo neck jumper underneath or just a normal jumper with some black tights and black boots. So easy, I just pick a jumper and it works together. Also I wore a stripey t-shirt with it the other day when it was a bit warmer and I was totally into that as well. An all round great purchase that I’ll be getting more and more use out of in the weeks and months to come.

Something I’m equally as obsessed with is my Aquarius necklace from Topshop. It’s delicate gold necklace with my star sign in a circle and I wear it a heck of a lot. I was lacking a delicate necklace and this has filled the slot perfectly.

I’m having a real skincare moment at the minute and it’s all hydration based. Although my skin is quite oily I think it’s also pretty dehydrated so I’ve been trying to use lots of products that will give it a boost but not clog my pores. The Nip and Fab Dragons Blood Plumping Serum (which I got in the Glossybox Advent Calendar) is perfect for that kind of thing. My skin drinks this up and it drys in about five minutes. I love it. In a morning I use that and then just before I use foundation I put a couple of pumps of the Barry M Unicorn Primer Drops Beauty Elixir to brighten up my face and give a boost. These two together are a dream team!

Let’s talk about the shea butter scent from the Body Shop. I’ve never had this one before and I don’t know why I’ve missed it for this long. My mum got me one of the sets for my birthday and it’s definitely become one of my new favourite scents. It’s so warming but not too sickly sweet and I’m all about it. I’ve also fallen back in love with the Body Shop Body Butters again. There’s nothing better than slathering a thick, deliciously smelling cream on after a winter shower.

For Christmas, my gran got me a load of these bath tea bags and they are an actual miracle. They let me have a wonderful smelling bath without the mess! I usually just put one of these in when I start running the bath (let it infuse you know) and then go in with the bubbles nearer the end. Once I’m ready to get in, take the bag out, give it and squeeze and done! I love all bath products but these are a bit more fun (also love tea so is very fitting).

Naked Heat and cool new tech | August Favourites

Beauty
A few beauty products in the love pile this month. First up is the eyeshadow palette of the moment – the Urban Decay Naked Heat palette. I’ve only had this palette for a week and a half but I’m already head over heels in love with it. A great selection of warm shades this is totally different to all the other palettes I have. I’m surprised at my favourite shades though. I thought I’d be all over the shimmery metallic shades but I’ve been drawn to the amazing mattes. I’ve been wearing Low Blow in the crease, blended out with Chaser and I’ve been loving that look, not too much but makes me not look half dead in the morning! I’m really excited to try out a serious smokey eye with this palette but for now I’m truly smitten. A new mascara favourite is the L’Oreal Paradise Mascara. One swipe and it’s ba-bam, dream lashes! It reminds me a lot of the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara which I was totally obsessed with a year of so ago when I had it. It fans out my lashes really well whilst still pumping up the volume. Definitely the best mascara I’ve tried in a while!
I’m a big fan of the Eylure Fleur de Force brow products and this month she released some new double ended brow products (see more of my thoughts here). My new favourite eyebrow pencil by far. I didn’t think I would like the cool toned shade as much as my warm Soap and Glory Brow Archery in Brownie Points but I’m seriously impressed. I have the pencil in the shade medium and what I like is that it would be really hard to over do it with this product. Unlike something like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade, which although I love it can be really easy to give yourself slug brows, it doesn’t really matter how much you apply it doesn’t look overdone. The fact that it has two tones and there are so many different options – I could rave about this so much!
Tech
This is the most exciting thing that’s happened this month. I am now the proud owner of an Apple Watch, I know! So exciting! I’ve been wanting one for a while and when the opportunity presented itself jumped at the chance to get one. I decided to go for the Rose Gold with the Pink Sand Strap because then it matches my phone, yep this is what the world has come to. I love the activity options with the watch. It gives you a little buzz every hour if you haven’t moved which is great if, like me, you sit at a desk and can be glued to it for hours on end. A few trips up and down the stairs every 60 minutes will keep your watch happy and your health too! I might do a more detailed post after I’ve used it for a little bit longer but so far I’m loving it.
TV
Quick TV mention. We watched The Loch this month and is was SO good! It’s an ITV drama about a murder in a small town in Scotland and everything that happens afterwards. We watched it over two nights and it was so gripping and there were many hide behind the pillow moments and there were multiple twists, ahh! I definitely recommend watching it if you like a good drama. Six episodes and it doesn’t drag, really good! I’ve also started rematching Granchester, one of my favourites as it’s easy watching but murder mystery-ey, love. Also, James Norton.

Things I’m loving from Boots

A couple of weeks ago I did a rather large Boots haul and there were a lot of hits and also a couple of misses. But today we are focusing on the positives and I’ll be taking you through what I really loved from the haul (which if you haven’t read the post then you can read it here) and what things you should really pick up and try. Some things are new in, some are old that people have loved for a long time that I’m just very late to the party to. Enjoy!

Let’s start with brushes and from the Real Techniques Core Collection there are two that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with. I don’t know how I lived my life before the Buffing Brush. It is the perfect foundation brush, dense so that it can foundation can be buffed but with hairs that are long enough to give a nice finish to the foundation. It feels really soft and I don’t think I’ll be able to use another brush fro my foundation ever again. The second brush that I love from the collection is the Contour Brush. I’ve never owned a contour brush before because I thought that I didn’t need one but I was totally wrong. It makes the perfect cheekbone shape (because if you’re like me you need to make cheekbones as opposed to find them and enhance them) and, like the buffing brush, is super soft. This brush works really well with the next product I’m going to mention which is the Maybelline Master Sculpt Contour Kit. I’m still working with the best way to use this product but I’m really liking it so far. The contour shade isn’t too warm and isn’t too cool, although a light hand is needed as it can easily build up into a very harsh line. The highlight shade is very nice for everyday, and I do use it on a daily basis, but if you want something super shimmery and highlighting then this will be a little too subtle for you. Something that I picked up off the cuff was the Soap and Glory Love At First Blush Stick in Pink, Pop and Pearl. I’d seen something about these sticks on a couple of blogs so I thought why not pick one up as I didn’t have anything like this in my collection. I’m so glad that i picked it up because I’ve fallen in love with this product and use it everyday. It’s been described as a cream version of Nars Orgasm Blush and is just a beautiful shimmery pink on the cheeks. It lasts very well on the skin and I really want to try of the highlight of this as well because I can tell it’s going to be good. Something that I have rediscovered is the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. I used to use this all the time but starting using other things but I’m so glad I went back to this one. You’ve heard it all before so I won’t go on about it but if you’ve never tried it then get yourself down to Boots now, you won’t regret it. I used to use the Rimmel Kohl Kajal in Jet Black religiously but I’m sorry to say I’ve moved on now. My holy grail eyeliner is now the Soap and Glory Smoulder Kohl Eyeliner. It stays in my waterline for a really long time without smudging, goes on smoothly and is jet black. It’s insanely good!

February Favourites 2016

Happy leap year everyone! Savour today because you’re not going to get another Feb 29th for four more years. This month’s favourites are very TV heavy, both in the binging and weekly series department. There’s also a little bit of food thrown in so without further ado here’s what I’ve been loving this month.

Beauty

No makeup in the favourites this month as I’m still testing out the giant hoard that I bought a couple of weeks ago (so expect my March favourites to be very makeup heavy!). When I got the Body Shop Hawaiian Kukui Cream from their Spa of the World range for Christmas I told myself I’d only use it on special occasions. At the beginning of this month I decided I should use it on more of a daily basis because it wasn’t going down and to be honest I just fell in love with it. It’s a thick cream that gives so much moisture to my legs and has such a beautiful scent that lingers and makes my pyjama bottoms smell fantastic! Another thing that smells amazing and is also from the Body Shop is the Coconut Hand Cream. I bought this last week and as soon as I applied it I fell in love. Did you know that people will give you funny looks if you keep smelling your hands? I found that out when I kept smelling my hands to get the coconut scent into my nostrils. These strange looks have led me to getting the Coconut Body Mist so if anyone in the Nottingham area gets an overwhelming whiff of coconut, it’s me walking around the streets. Sorry in advance.

TV

February has been a huge month for TV favourites. I’ve definitely been neglecting my work and hiding up my duvet watching another episode of whatever it is I’ve been obsessed with. First up is THE BEST PROGRAMME EVER IN THE WORLD, Happy Valley. If you’ve never heard of it, where have you been! We’re on series two now so if you’ve never seen it lucky you, you have a whole series and a half to catch up on! It’s on the edge of my gore capacity but the story is so engaging and it’s just perfect ‘on the edge of your seat’ thrills. Basically it’s about a police woman who’s life hasn’t been the most fortunate and what she gets up to (it’s much more interesting than that trust me). I forgot to mention it’s filmed where I live, and I mean like streets I’ve walked down, places I’ve been and that is just so exciting for me! Please give it a watch, you won’t regret it. A series I binge watched this month was How I Met Your Mother. I’ve never been overly interested in watching it but one day I thought I might as well give it a go because there must be a reason why people like it. I became obsessed during the three weeks it took me to watch all nine seasons (I was slacking a little, I had a weekend off and couldn’t be bothered some other days so it wasn’t my best work). Let’s go to the mall has become one of my favourite songs and I need a yellow umbrella in my life. If you’ve never seen it, it’s just a nice, easy watching programme that’s very funny.

Other

The ‘other’ thing I’ve been loving this month is afternoon tea. I’ve been twice in February for birthday celebrations and I just love it. I think it’s the fact that it’s classy, tasty and there’s sometimes alcohol involved and I’m a big fan of all of those things. This month I’ve been to the Spiced Pear in Hepworth, near Huddersfield (you can read all about that here) and Brown’s in Nottingham (expect a post to come on that very soon).

My 2015 Favourites!

My favourite primer of the year has to be the Makeup Forever Step 1 Mattifying Primer. I bought this when I was on holiday in Florida and it’s the only primer I’ve used since. It’s in between a silicone and a cream texture and makes my makeup stay all day and helps control shine. Foundation wise this year has been the year of L’Oreal. Although I have loved the True Match Foundation it’s been all about the L’Oreal Infallible Matte 24 Hour Foundation. I know that I love this because I’ve bought it in a shade lighter for winter which I never normally do! I love the way that it’s high coverage without feeling it and looks really good on the skin. It also deals well with my oiliness and lasts all day on my face. There have been a few concealer favourites this year but the Maybelline Eraser Eye came out on top with it’s amazing coverage and lasting power on the skin. I discovered the Boujois Healthy Balance Powder this year and fell absolutely head over heels in love with it! Good coverage, not cakey and smells amazing. I don’t think I’ll ever change my powder, this is the one for me!

I discovered brow tinting this year which has been an amazing life saving and when my brows are in a pretty good shape all I need to use is the Maybelline Brow Drama and I use the shade medium brown. I’ve had this one for a very long time so I could probably do with a new one but I love the way that it distributes the perfect amount of product and doesn’t leave my brows feeling hard and crispy. In terms of brow pencils there has been one absolute winner, the Soap and Glory Brow Archery Pencil. I have this in two shades, Blondeshell and Hot Chocolate, the latter being my favourite of the two. The nib is thin so is great for precise brow drawing and the colour is great. I couldn’t imagine using any other brow pencil!
Eye primer wise I have used the Mac Painterly Paint Pot all year and nothing else. It matches my eyelids perfectly, neutralises veins and stops my eyeshadow from creasing. I’ve also used it pretty much everyday for an entire year and haven’t made much of a dint in it. Palettes. This was a very hard category to choose a favourite but I have to say there is one clear winner and that is the Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette. I’ve used this so much this year and have hit pan on several shadows, a tell tale sign that things must be going well! The right mix of neutral and party I can do a lot with this palette and it’s great and compact. I use it so much that I’ve left it in my uni room and brought other palettes with me to convince myself to use something else!
Winged liner has become a big thing for me in the past 12 months and I now wear it pretty much everyday. Although I’ve tried three types of liners from the L’Oreal Super Liner range I can’t pick a favourite. I’ve used the original, Superstar and Perfect Slim. All of them were amazing. If you’re a regular reader of my blog then you’ll know that the only eyeliners I use in my waterline are the Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajals, especially Jet Black. I’ve used these for years and they work really well and last for quite a good length of time, especially considering the price. I’ve had a very up and down year in the mascara department and I have to say that the start of 2015 was where the best mascaras were, and they were both magazine freebies. I enjoyed using the Benefit Roller Lash but my favourite was the Clinique High Impact Volume Mascara. It volumised, lengthened and was an all round amazing product. I never got round to repurchasing it but remembering how amazing it was makes me want to have it back in my life.
On New Years Eve 2014 I bought the Soap and Glory Solar Powder Bronzer and I haven’t looked back. It’s an all round amazing product, especially since they updated the package, and I don’t think that I could change back to another bronzer. Winter or Summer I get so much use from this product. I’ve never been one to have an extensive blush collection and this year hasn’t changed that but I think I have found one that will keep me going for a very long time. When I was in America I picked up the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Tipsy and I absolutely love it. It’s a warm pinky peach and it goes with all of my makeup looks, at the minute there really is no need for me to have another blush in my life, but we shall see what 2016 holds in that department. Things have been quiet on the highlighter front this year so there’s nothing in that category, but if anyone has any recommendations that would be much appreciated.
This year has to have been the year where I got seriously into lip products. Before this year I owned a few, select products that were pretty much none existent on the  lips but I have really broadened my horizons. I could have chosen a lot of products to have been my overall favourite but I have to say that looking at them all there is one clear winner. That winner is Mac Kinda Sexy, which was kindly gifted to me by some pretty great friends for my birthday. It is my perfect nude, an amazing lipstick and gorgeously matte. It’s my go to night out lipstick and works well with or without a lipliner. Simply amazing!

October Favourites!

Oh how time flies. October already and just two months until 2016. Crazy! My favourites are a small little group this month but they’re all amazing and seriously well loved by me! So without further ado, let’s get into it.

Beauty

The Fleur De Force Eyeshadow Quad in Cosmic Bronze has literally become my life. I’ve worn it everyday this month, day and night, and I love how versatile it is. I put the lightest colour all over the lid, the light brown in the crease and the darkest brown on the outer corners. To finish it off I take the shimmery, sparkle shade on the outer lid and finish the look off with winged liner. I love how it looks and I’ve never worn four shadows so much before which proves that this is something special. I’ve been loving neutral nails this month and my favourite polish has been Topshop Nail Varnish in Threadbare. It’s my perfect nude and looks great on the nails. Limited in the chip department, it makes me want to try more of the Topshop nail stuff. Last but certainly not least in the beauty category is a fragrance favourite. The Elizabeth and James White Nirvana Perfume is becoming a fast favourite. I love the fact that it’s in a rollerball form so it’s easy to carry around with me and the scent is so gorgeous that I just want to smell it all the time.

Television

I’m a serious lover of dramas, and Autumn is the time for the best ones to come out. Unforgotten is an amazing new ITV drama that follows a police team trying to solve a murder that was committed 39 years ago. It has the right mix of suspense, sadness and it really makes you think. We’re currently on episode three and I’m excited to see where it ends up! Lewis also started again and having only got into it recently I’m super duper excited. It’s annoying that they’re all two parters but each storyline is amazing and I can’t get enough!

September Favourites!

September seems to have been a pretty busy month! A lot has been packed into a short space of time, nothing too exciting but things that have made it into my favourites. This was my last month at home before I moved back to uni (currently sat at my new desk and so far I’m loving it!). I’ve watched quite a few new programmes and this seems to be the month of buying new beauty products, but if those are a success they’ll end up being in next months faves.

Beauty

Quite a bit in the beauty department this month so I’ll just get cracking! This month has been the month I got into wearing braver and darker colours on the lips. I talked about my love for the Clinique Pop Lipsticks and the red one has been something that I’m just obsessed with. In the nude department I rediscovered my Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Heather Shimmer. I bought this at the end of my first year of uni thinking that it would be a ‘your lips but better colour’. What I failed to realise was that my lips are not that dark. At all. So it’s been gathering a bit of dust in my drawer until now when I’m a bit more confident in my lip colour choices. I love how autumnal this looks and it’s moisturising but still stays on my lips like it’s nobody’s business. The L’Oreal Superstar Super Liner has been a love of mine for a fair few months but has really come into it’s own this month. I feel like a look a bit strange if I’m not rocking a bit of eyeliner these days which proves how much I’m in love. I’m loving wearing Poppy Pop on the lips with really light eye shadow and winged liner. I think it looks amazing and I’m a little obsessed! Something that’s a little more skincare related is the Origins Overnight Facial Mask. I bought this in a set a few months ago and thought it was going to be the one that I used the least. It took me a while to get into it but my when my skin went through bit of an oily dry spell at the beginning of the summer (which really confused me because I never thought that could happen) and this was my literal saviour. Now I try to use it at least once a week to plump up my skin and make it smooth and full of a good kind of moisture as apposed to just oil.

Film and TV

What a month for this category! I discovered a lot of things this month but there were two films and two TV shows that have just captured my heart. The first thing is The Amazing Race. I hadn’t heard of this before but I found it on Sky Go and thought I’d give it a go. It’s an american show where ten pairs of people, anything from couples to family teams, race around the world to win one million dollars. I’d seriously recommend giving it a watch because it is just so incredibly good that me and my mum and dad flew through the four series that were available. Next, Lewis. Why I’ve never watched this programme before I don’t know. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a ITV murder mystery programme that is just so amazing on so many levels. I have a never ending love for these types of shows so I’m glad that there are nine series’ for me to get my teeth into. Now onto films. I watched Up recently which is a film that I try and avoid because I just think that the beginning is so sad. But I plucked up the courage and it’s definitely up there with the great Pixar films (but let’s not lie, they’re all good!). I sobbed throughout so if you give this a watch, be warned. Finally Pitch Perfect 2. I’m not going to say much except go and watch it and listen to the soundtrack.

August Favourites

Another month, another favourites and this month I must have been in a really loving mood because there were so many things that I put on my list of favourites. I’ve cut it down to be my true loves so let’s get started!

Clinique Colour Pop Lipsticks

I only bought these beauties last week but I have to say that I’m already in love! I’ve been eyeing these up for a while so when I was in the Trafford Centre last Saturday I took the plunge. I’ve always wanted Melon Pop but after a pole of my family I went for Poppy Pop. The only problem was that that was the only one that they didn’t have. Because I really wanted one I went for Melon Pop and later that day I went to Debenhams to get my hand on Poppy Pop. I love how they are both so different and I can tell that these are going to be well loved!

Betty’s tea and the best mug in the world

If you live in the Yorkshire are then no doubt you’ll know what and where Betty’s is but for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure it’s a tearoom (there are 4 in various towns and cities) that is just amazing. They serve gorgeous meals, beautiful cakes and the best cup of tea ever. So there was delight in my household when one of our relatives got my mum a Betty’s gift bag that had some Betty’s tea bags in it. We’ve stopped using our normal Tesco tea and I think it will be hard to go back. There’s just something about it that makes it the best tea in the world. I love it! I bought my Rapunzel mug when I was in Florida and I love it so much. It’s large which I like because you can get a lot of liquid in it and it just looks so pretty and cute. Both of these things together have been a major favourite this month!

Sweet potato and ranch

When I was on holiday in Florida at the beginning of this month (which I’ve never mentioned on this blog before, ha ha) I fell in love with jacket sweet potatoes. I love how easy they were to make, just shove them in the microwave and then the oven, and they were sticky and sweet and went with most meals. The icing on the sweet potato cake was putting it with ranch. OMG I just loooooove ranch! In the UK we don’t have as much of a ranch thing as the americans and I have no idea why because it’s just so amazing. I’m going to see if I can find some to take to uni with me because that will totally be my staple.

My furry friends

The picture above shows the latest fluffy toys that I’ve added to my collection. They’re Thumper and Doug. They’re super cute and I love them so much. That’s all I have to say really, love them!

May Favourites

This is the first in hopefully a long line in monthly favourites posts!  I think that by doing my favourites monthly rather than weekly it’ll be a more accurate representation of what I’ve been loving over a long period of time, rather than just for that week. So let’s jump into the faves!

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

This has been such a good discovery this month. Pairing this with my next favourite is like my new fave makeup combo! I use it when it’s wet and it does a really good job at making my foundation and concealer melt into the skin and really helps it to last all day. I’m finding that it’s starting to get a little grubby and I have no idea how to clean this little sponge thing so if anyone has any ideas then please let me know!

L’Oreal True Match Concealer

I’ve professed my love for the foundation version of this little beauty on my blog before and the concealer does not disappoint. I got it as part of a 3 for 2 offer from Boots and just picked it up on a whim without really knowing much about it. I find that the coverage of this product is quite full and is able to cover up both blemishes and the under eye area with ease. I have the shade 02 vanilla and it is the perfect shade for me, I’m so in love with this product.

Eating Out

This month has been the month of eating out. I’ve been all over the place, both restaurants and cafes which means that in the upcoming weeks my Tuesday posts are full of good food, yay! I don’t know where I think I’ve got all of this money from but recently I’ve been eating out multiple times a week. It’s just so hard being in Nottingham and not wanting to try out all of the amazing places that it has to offer.

Tour de Yorkshire T-Shirt

This is a pretty random one but I got a little parcel through from home the other week and it contained this T-Shirt from my dad. I’m in serious love with it. Not only is it one of the comfiest things ever or that it’s green but it reminds me of such a good day when I went home to go and watch it pass through the area near to where I live. Also I’m Yorkshire obsessed so it’s nice to have a top to share that with the world!

Getting into the Swing

I’m so proud that since I decided to blog four days a week that I’ve actually stuck to it! Yay! It was easy when I was blogging about my holiday as there was so much to talk about but now, being back at university and my bank being a little low so i can’t go out and do exciting things, my life has got a little, dare I say, dull. So I’ve come up with a schedule to keep myself on track, here we go!

Monday- I’m going to keep this day free so if anything is on my mind then that’s what the post will be about, last week’s monday post being an example, I mean who even thinks about highlighters never mind writes about them!

Tuesday- This will be something to do with food. Whether it’s a review of a restaurant that I’ve recently been too or something that I really liked that I cooked myself during that week. Just anything that’s tasty and delicious!

Thursday- Welcome to list’s day! It could be a top ten, things I recommend, the list is endless (oh dear, what a pun).

Friday- This will continue being favourite friday and although I’ve only been doing it for a few weeks I’m really enjoying thinking about what I’m really liking wearing/ doing/ whatever at the minute.
